Any time I lead a small group or teach a class, I want to have a co-leader or apprentice by my side. To me, that’s just good leadership. I believe that one of the marks of an excellent leader is that he or she is always training others. I also want to have my replacement ready and equipped, just in case God calls me to something else—and He has surprised more than once by moving me on before I thought it was time. In addition, an apprentice can significantly reduce my workload and increase my effectiveness as a group leader. Some people develop and work with apprentices well; others don’t seem to know how to use this valuable resource.
